I was prepared to disagree. I don't, though. I may go so far as to say this is one area the humanities seems to have really gone off the rails.
Is there evidence to support such a heavy reliance on these essays? We seemed to throw out standardized tests when those had stronger evidence as highly effective predictors. Why are we rewarding essays above that? (Assuming,of course, accurate reporting in story.)
