Maybe I'm just too used to advertising blatantly in my windows env that I'm not noticing ads on Ubuntu. Which MOTD ads are you talking about?

The ones you remove by

   setting ENABLED=0 in /etc/motd-news
   apt remove ubuntu-advantage-tools
