Ha, just this morning, via the HN discussion on "Putting the Chat into Snapchat", I learned of jwz's axiom, which was modified for the sake of discussion: "Every program attempts to expand until it implements user-to-user messaging. Looks like Foursquare was thinking along the same lines:
